I finally got around to listening to Lady Gaga's much-hyped album ARTPOP. I've heard a mixed bag of reviews for the album, and I figured it was finally time for me to make up my own mind.
I'll start off by saying this: I love the cover. If I were rating the album solely on that she'd get a great review. But I'm not, I'm rating her based on the music.
Now, I'm not a huge fan of Gaga's. I like a bunch of her songs, but I don't go out of my way to listen to her music or follow her life. Still, I've heard every album she has put out so it seemed inevitable that I would listen to ARTPOP.
ARTPOP wasn't a huge disappointment for me. It has it's moments and there are a handful of really catchy songs. There are also songs I didn't like, but that's to be expected with most albums. My biggest complaint with the album is it seems repetitive. Many of her songs are solid as stand-alones, but listening to them back-to-back they begin to get repetitive. The album is filled with Gaga's need to entertain, her quest to find love, and many analogies that make reference to drug use. By the time you're halfway through the album these things become expected.
I also don't see a stand-out hit on the album. It's lacking a song like Poker Face or Bad Romance. Her first single, Applause, hasn't performed as well as people anticipated and I can understand why the album as a whole has underperformed. The album is full of new songs, but she isn't singing about anything new. Everything she talks about has be referenced on other songs.
Overall, I'd say the album is worth a listen. I'd say it is about as good as Born This Way, but it's not a high point in her career.
