Black Friday Failure

There's an odd part of me that loves black Friday. We really don't need people trying to kill each other for 60% off a television or a $3 box set of the entire In Living Color series, but I like to see what I can get for my money. I don't go out early in the morning or late on Thanksgiving night, so I miss all of the good stuff. I guess that's the price I have to pay to not jeopardizing a limb.

Anyhow. I did go out today, but around 1 in the afternoon. I was utterly and completely underwhelmed. Not by the crowds, there were still a lot of people out. It was hard to find a parking spot in the mall, but it was a manageable crowd. I was underwhelmed by the deals being offered. Many places were offering discounts ONLY if you purchased a certain amount of merchandise. I went into clothing stores like JCPenney and Macy's, but it's nearly impossible to determine what is actually on sale, which items the coupons apply to, and which items will never be discounted. Stores that offer their own name brand (Gap, J.Crew, American Eagle) had respectable discounts. Not compelling enough for me to make a purchase, but if I actually wanted something I certainly would have waited in line to purchase it.

So I left the mall empty-handed. I then proceeded to Target where I purchased a few items I actually needed. These purchases certainly did not justify my Black Friday trip, but I must say, the odd part of me that enjoys Black Friday also enjoys witnessing the remaining crowds and seeing if any of the deals actually justify the pandemonium.

Now that the day is over, I hear stories of Hunger Game style frenzies to obtain discounted electronics. People were hurt, shot, even killed. I enjoy a good discount, but I refuse to sustain a concussion in the process.

So here's my advice: just go online. Yes, you have to wait for shipping. And yes, the discounts are often not quite as strong, but the luxury of staying home and the ability to shop around with ease is worth the somewhat heightened prices.

OK, good luck on Cyber Monday.
