So we're back on the holiday topics. Guess what? It's holiday season. It's basically all people are talking about now. I can't watch TV for 10 minutes without being interrupted with "holiday" themed advertisements.
So it's nice and cute to wish everyone a "happy holiday," but should we really be wishing each other a "happy holiday?" I celebrate Christmas, and I really have no qualms wishing other people a Merry Christmas. If someone wishes me a "happy holiday" I will happily accept that wishing. I understand that the intentions are positive, and I know that the individual christening me with this greeting is trying to be politically correct.
Here's the dilemma. Using the term "happy holidays" is an attempt to be inclusive with your wishes. I understand that. Not everyone celebrates Christmas. Some people celebrate Hanukkah, or Kwanzaa, or Winter Solstice, or Boxing Day, or whatever the fuck you want. I get that. At this point I really don't feel "happy holidays" is an inclusive blanket term.
Why? Hanukkah is over! For some people, the holiday season is over. There's no point in acting like you're being inclusive when you don't have enough common sense to know some people are done with their holiday season. Of course, most people will just smile and accept the greeting, because most people understand the good intention behind it.
It know it seems early for some people to be through with the holiday season. Every holiday season ought to include a Madea movie, and 2013's movie isn't released until Friday. Unfortunately, those who celebrate Hanukkah do not choose the date of their holiday.
I really think people should just wish upon others what they intent. If it's December 25th, I'm going to wish you a Merry Christmas. The following day, if you wish me a Happy Kwanzaa I'll accept it. People know why the wishes are being bestowed upon them. Don't act like you're wishing people "happy holidays" because Thanksgiving just passed. Acknowledge that it's Christmas, or Hanukkah, and accept the fact that there are multiple holidays being celebrate. If you're wished a happy holiday- whichever holiday that may be- accept it and seize the opportunity to learn about an occasion you may not be fully aware of.
